Join us in our SMS Step Into Spring campaign this April and May, raising funds for the SMS Foundation UK to allow us to continue supporting families diagnosed with Smith-Magenis syndrome in the UK. We have some exciting activities below for you to take part in, or to support those in our community who are taking part:
So Many Steps for SMS:
The Riddell family, members of our community, will be taking part in So Many Steps for SMS, a personal challenge of walking 10,000 steps a day each for the whole of April, raising money in sponsorship for the SMS Foundation.
Mark is dad to Grace, who has SMS, and says ‘I have set myself a challenge to walk at least 10,000 steps a day throughout April to raise much-needed funds for the Smith-Magenis Syndrome Foundation. Grace turns 14 years old on the 13th April. She was diagnosed with Smith-Magenis Syndrome when she was just 10 days old, a diagnosis that flipped our world upside down. 14yrs later she is the most amazing little girl who has the biggest smile, her strength and determination is an inspiration. The Smith-Magenis Syndrome Foundation is a charity that is very close to my heart, they support families like ours. Smith-Magenis Syndrome is a life-changing diagnosis, the support and guidance trustees and staff at the SMS foundation give to families is invaluable.’
And the good news is anyone can join in! All you have to do is get walking! You can choose the time and date and you can choose the challenge – join the Riddell family and others in walking So Many Steps for SMS and raise vital funds for the SMS Foundation. Whether you choose to walk 1,000 steps or 10,000 – join us in supporting families living with SMS who need our help.
Scotland Virtual Kiltwalk:
At the end of April, our very own CEO Nigel Over will be taking part in the Scotland Virtual Kiltwalk (Friday 23-25 April 2021), raising funds for the SMS Foundation whom Nigel has proudly been associated with for 9 years.
Nigel says…
Our boots are made for walking, and that’s just what we’ll do.
One day soon, the Over’s will walk right over to you.
But for now, we’ll put our West foot forward within the Lothians in aid of Smith-Magenis syndrome.
For our SMS community, on the Kilt walk we shall roam.
If every one of our supporters donated £10 to Nigel and the Kiltwalk, we would raise £3,000! The great news about the Kiltwalk is that 50% of all funds raised will then be match funded by Sir Tom Hunter (philanthropist and founder of the Kiltwalk), meaning your donation will go even further – so for every £10 donated, the Foundation will receive £15!
5kMay:
Our Fundraising Manager Helen will be taking part in 5K May this year, a virtual challenge during the month of May asking members of the public to run, walk, skip, hop, dance or wiggle their way around 5k and donate £5 to their chosen charity before nominating 5 friends to do the same!
Last Summer, the #Run5Donate5Nominate5 running challenge went viral, with members of the public running 5K, donating £5 and then nominating a further 5 friends to take on the trend. This year, I am joining in by taking part in 5K May, a new virtual challenge where I will be completing 5K in my own way – I haven’t decided between running, cycling (or maybe even skipping!) yet but I know I will have lots of fun taking part!
