Lily’s Dream Comes True: A Remarkable Work Experience Journey

June 19, 2023

At the age of 16, Lily Stevenson has recently completed her school work experience placement at Bliss Hairdressers in Devizes, Wiltshire. This opportunity not only allowed Lily to explore her passion for hairdressing but also provided her with an invaluable boost to her confidence and personal growth.

Recognising her passion for hairdressing, Silverwood School played a vital role in supporting Lily’s ambition by facilitating her work experience placement at Bliss Hairdressers. Throughout her time at the hairdressing salon, Lily was accompanied by a teaching assistant from Silverwood School. With guidance from the teaching assistant, Lily was provided with the necessary support to carry out her tasks.

Jacqui and Charlotte, the owners of Bliss Hairdressers, wholeheartedly embraced Lily’s work experience journey, allowing her the chance to try out her dream job in their salon. By providing a nurturing environment, they not only encouraged Lily to explore her potential but also supported her throughout her time at the salon.

From sweeping the floor and cleaning up after customers Lily eagerly took on various tasks, demonstrating her willingness to learn and proving herself to be an enthusiastic and committed team member. As her confidence grew, she was entrusted with more responsibilities, including mixing colours for clients and washing equipment.

On her final day at Bliss Hairdressers, Lily was rewarded with an exciting opportunity to wash a mannequin’s hair in the salon’s wash basin. This hands-on experience allowed her to practice various hairstyling techniques, including brushing, braiding, and using hair rollers. Lily thoroughly enjoyed this chance to showcase her skills and further fuel her passion for the art of hairdressing.

Lily’s work experience journey at Bliss Hairdressers is a testament to the transformative power of supportive environments and inclusive opportunities. Silverwood School’s commitment to fulfilling Lily’s dream, coupled with the support of Jacqui and Charlotte, has provided her with an unforgettable experience. By embracing her passion, exploring new skills, and interacting with customers, Lily not only gained confidence but also paved the way for other young people with learning disabilities to realise their dreams. Her story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us that with the right support and encouragement, every individual can unlock their true potential.
