Understanding Cerebral Visual Impairment (Webinar Recording)

Event Date: 29th September 2025 (Past Event)

The SMS Foundation UK, in collaboration with CVI Now and PRISMS.org, is pleased to host a vital and informative webinar focused on Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) — a condition that affects how the brain processes visual information.

Presented by experts Ali Mahady and Lacey Smith from CVI Now at the Perkins School for the Blind, this session is designed especially for parents and carers in the SMS community, and is also open to the wider developmentally delayed and rare disease communities.

What You’ll Learn

  • What is CVI?
  • When to suspect CVI
  • CVI Voices
  • General Supports
  • Next Steps
  • Resources and supports for families
  • Q&A

Research suggests that up to 80% of individuals with a learning disability may have CVI, and many individuals with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) are likely affected without knowing it. Early recognition and understanding of CVI can lead to more effective support strategies, improved communication, and better long-term outcomes.

This webinar is a collaborative effort between the SMS Foundation, CVI Now, and PRISMS.org — all working together to raise awareness and empower families with knowledge and tools to support their loved ones.

Whether you’re just beginning to explore CVI or looking for ways to better support someone with it, this webinar offers expert insights and practical guidance that can make a real difference.
